Clearing Away The Rubbish From The Carnival

Clearing Away The Rubbish From The Carnival

28 August 2007

Within minutes of the Notting Hill Carnival ending yesterday (Monday 27 August) more than 140 cleaners from Kensington and Chelsea Council swung into action.

Their mammoth task was to clear away all the discarded waste - everything from cans and bottles to paper and food - and ensure that by this morning the Royal Borough’s streets are pristine once more.

Last year just under 200 tonnes of rubbish was collected after the two-day event - about the same as the year before.

Cllr Nicholas Paget-Brown, Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Environmental Management and Leisure said:

“The clean-up operation is a massive task and the Council’s refuse and street-cleaning crews are some of the Carnival’s unsung heroes. They work throughout the night to ensure the streets are back to normal by the Tuesday morning.”

A total of 18 teams of eight refuse staff and waste managers worked alongside a fleet of 30 vehicles on both nights.

Though the priority is on clearing the streets to minimise disruption for residents, last year a team of four people collected more than two tonnes of plastic and glass bottles and beer cans for recycling.

This year the amount of waste for recycling is set to increase - the recycling team is being doubled and recycling collection points are being installed for local residents and those attending Carnival.
